Description of the Snina region
The area of the Snina region is 805.05 km². It is situated in the north-eastern part of Slovakia on the border with Poland and the Ukraine. There are about 40000 inhabitants living there. The region is surrounded by the East Carpathians. The Bukovské Vrchy, Nízke Beskydy and Vihorlatské vrchy make up a part of these mountains. The centre of the region is the town of Snina. There are 33 small villages in this area.
In the Snina region lies Nová Sedlica, the eastermost village in Slovakia. In the north-western part of the district there are seven villages that were evacuated during the building process of the Starinská dam in 1987. The dam was built to supply towns in the east of Slovakia with drinking water. The Snina district belongs to the Prešov region. Prešov has 95 000 inhabitants and it lies about 100 km west of Snina.
